Preconnect

nounStandard termFire & Safety

A hose line already attached to a pump discharge for rapid deployment.

A preconnected hose line is stored on an apparatus with one end permanently coupled to a pump discharge. Crews fold or flake the hose in a specific bed or tray, allowing a single firefighter to pull the line, advance it to the fire, and call for water immediately without having to make connections at the panel.

Heard on the job

Pull the cross-lay preconnect and stretch it to the front door.

Insider tip

The way a preconnect is packed determines how smoothly it pays out. A sloppy load will catch on the tray and delay the attack.
