Fiber crew slang for running an OTDR test, from the idea of firing light pulses down the glass. You shoot a fiber, shoot a span, shoot it at 1310 and 1550, or shoot it bidirectionally, and the result is a shot or trace. A fiber that shot clean has no unexpected events.
Splicing's done at the hut, I'm going to shoot all 144 from here, then we'll go shoot them back from the cabinet.
Related terms
OTDR
Optical Time Domain Reflectometer: a tester that maps a fiber's loss and events by timing light reflected back along it.
Trace
The graph an OTDR produces, plotting returned power in dB against distance along the fiber.
Bidirectional averaging
Testing a fiber with an OTDR from both ends and averaging the results to get true splice losses.
Event
Any point on an OTDR trace where the signal departs from the smooth fiber slope, such as a splice, connector or break.
