Duplet

nounStandard termFarming

An historic term for an empty box added to a beehive for expansion.

An older beekeeping term for a secondary, empty box placed above the main brood chamber to provide the colony with extra space. It allowed the bees room to expand their population or store surplus honey during a strong nectar flow. In standard apiaries, this function is served by standard honey supers.
