Cornshucker

nounStandard termFarming

A mechanical device or machine component designed to strip the husks off ears of corn.

This equipment uses a series of spinning rubber or metal rollers to grab and pull the tough outer husks away from the ear without damaging the kernels inside. Standalone stationary units process harvested ears in a barn or processing facility, while integrated husking beds perform the same job inside a combine or picker as it moves through the field.

Heard on the job

The rollers on the cornshucker are worn smooth, so it keeps jamming up with half-husked ears.

Insider tip

Keep hands and loose clothing far away from the intake rollers, as they are designed to aggressively grab and pull anything that touches them.
