Convertible husbandry

nounStandard termFarming

A historic farming system that alternates arable cropping with periods of grass pasture.

An older agricultural method where fields are ploughed for grain crops for a few years, then seeded with grass and clover to serve as livestock pasture. This rotation allows animal manure and resting periods to restore soil fertility before the land is tilled again. It was a major advancement over leaving fields bare fallow.
