WORM drive

nounStandard termElectronics

A storage device that permanently records data so it cannot be altered or erased.

A WORM (Write Once, Read Many) drive uses physical or chemical changes on a medium to permanently store information. Once the drive controller writes a block of data, the hardware prevents that sector from ever being overwritten. These drives are strictly used for archival storage, legal compliance, and secure audit trails where data immutability is required.

Heard on the job

The security footage gets dumped directly to a WORM drive so the defense can't claim the files were tampered with.
