An active component relies on a source of energy to perform its intended function, often capable of injecting power into a circuit or providing directional control of current flow. Transistors, operational amplifiers, and integrated circuits are active devices because they can amplify signals or switch states. They contrast with passive components like resistors and capacitors, which can only consume, store, or dissipate energy.
We need to separate the active components from the passives on the BOM to get an accurate cost for the silicon.

- Passive: Active components can amplify or control power, while passive components can only consume or store it.
