Split-ring

nounStandard termElectronics

A metallic ring with a small gap, used to create resonant structures in microwave and metamaterial circuits.

A conductive loop interrupted by a slit, often paired concentrically with another similar ring. The structure acts as an LC circuit, where the ring provides inductance and the gap provides capacitance. Engineers use them to build split-ring resonators for microwave filters or to engineer artificial materials with a negative magnetic permeability.

Heard on the job

The antenna design relies on a split-ring resonator to achieve the required notch frequency without adding bulky discrete components.
