Solion

nounStandard termElectronics

A historic electrochemical component that uses ions in a solution to amplify or switch signals.

An early alternative to the transistor that relies on the movement of ions through an electrolyte rather than electrons through a solid or a vacuum. Designers experimented with them for low-frequency applications and analog integration. They proved too slow and bulky to compete with silicon semiconductors and were quickly abandoned.

The museum has a prototype navigation circuit that uses a solion to integrate the acceleration signals.
