One-hot

adjectiveStandard termElectronics

An encoding scheme where only a single bit in a group is active at any given time.

A digital state or encoding method representing states using a dedicated bit for each condition. Out of a set of bits, exactly one is high (1) while all others are low (0). It simplifies decoding logic and speeds up state machines in hardware design, though it consumes more flip-flops compared to binary encoding.

Heard on the job

We should switch the state machine to one-hot encoding so it meets our timing constraints.

Insider tip

One-hot encoding is heavily favored in FPGA design because flip-flops are plentiful but combinatorial logic delays can cause timing failures.
