NTC

abbreviationStandard termElectronics

A property where a component's electrical resistance drops as its temperature rises.

An abbreviation for negative temperature coefficient, describing a material or component whose electrical resistance decreases as its temperature increases. This property is heavily exploited in specialized resistors used for temperature sensing, inrush current limiting, and thermal compensation circuits.

Heard on the job

Put an NTC thermistor in series with the mains input to limit the inrush current when the capacitors charge.
