A data storage technique used in hard disk drives where the magnetic dipole moments of the media are oriented perpendicular to the disk platter, rather than parallel to it. This arrangement allows magnetic domains to be packed much closer together without demagnetizing each other, significantly increasing the areal density and storage capacity of the drive.
Switching to perpendicular recording allowed them to break the 100 gigabit per square inch barrier on the new platters.
