Groundlaying

nounStandard termCeramics & Glass

A technique for applying an even, solid background color to ceramics.

A traditional decorating method where an oil-based medium is painted onto a glazed ceramic surface, and then dry powdered enamel color is dusted over it. The powder adheres only to the oiled areas, creating a perfectly smooth, uniform background color after firing, without visible brush strokes.
