Muff

nounStandard termCeramics & Glass

A blown cylinder of glass that is split and flattened to create flat sheet glass.

Glassblowers create this elongated, hollow cylinder by swinging and blowing a large gather of glass in a trench. Once the cylinder reaches the desired length and diameter, the ends are cut off. The resulting tube is scored lengthwise, placed in a flattening kiln, and unrolled into a rectangular sheet of glass.

Heard on the job

We need to get this muff into the flattening oven before it drops below working temperature.
