Drip edge

nounStandard termBuilding

A metal flashing installed at roof perimeters to direct water away from the fascia and underlying wood.

This angled metal strip is nailed along the eaves and rakes of a roof deck before the roofing material is installed. Its outward-kicked lower lip breaks the surface tension of water, forcing runoff to drop clear of the fascia board rather than curling back under the shingles. It protects the roof sheathing and exterior trim from rot and water damage.

Heard on the job

We need another bundle of drip edge for the garage eaves before we can lay the starter strip.

Insider tip

At the eaves, install the drip edge directly on the wood deck under the underlayment. At the rakes, install it over the underlayment.
