Long block

nounStandard termAutomotive

A replacement engine assembly that includes the engine block, rotating assembly, cylinder heads, and valvetrain.

This subassembly provides a nearly complete engine core, lacking only the external bolt-on components like the intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, fuel system, and accessories. Mechanics order these to replace catastrophically damaged engines without having to rebuild the internal rotating or valvetrain components. It saves significant labor time compared to building an engine from scratch.

Heard on the job

The rod knock is so bad we're just going to order a remanufactured long block and swap his accessories over.

Do not mix it up with

  • Short block: A short block only contains the block, crank, rods, and pistons, while a long block adds the cylinder heads and camshafts.
