Buzzin' dozen

nounShop talkAutomotive

A slang term for Detroit Diesel two-stroke V12 engines.

The buzzin' dozen is a nickname for the Detroit Diesel 12V71, 12V92, or 12V149 series of two-stroke V12 engines. These engines fire every time a piston reaches the top of its stroke, producing a distinctively loud, high-pitched exhaust howl at operating speed. Mechanics revere them for their durability and the massive torque they deliver in heavy equipment.

Insider tip

These engines are infamous for leaking oil, with mechanics joking that if a Detroit Diesel is not leaking, it is out of oil.
