Rodding

Rodding turns up in 2 fields: waterproofing, mechanical. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Sealants & Waterproofing

Rodding in waterproofing

Installing backer rod into joints ahead of the sealant crew.

On big jobs one person rods while another guns and a third tools. Rodding means picking the right size, pushing the rod to a consistent depth with a roller, avoiding twists and stretches, and never puncturing closed-cell rod. Rod that is stretched during install shrinks back and leaves gaps at the ends. Rodding too far ahead lets rain or dust get into open joints.

"You're rodding way ahead of me, if it rains tonight all that rod's soaked. Stay one drop ahead, tops."

Mechanical Engineering & Machinery

Rodding in mechanical

A network or assembly of rigid rods used to transmit mechanical motion across a distance.

A mechanical linkage system composed of solid metal rods, bellcranks, and pivots. It translates linear or rotational input from an operator to a remote mechanism. Though largely replaced by hydraulic and fly-by-wire systems, mechanical rodding remains common in rail switches, heavy machinery controls, and legacy aircraft flight controls.

"The throttle rodding is binding up somewhere near the firewall bulkhead."
