Line speed
Line speed turns up in 2 fields: powder coating, railroad. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Line speed in powder coating
How fast the conveyor moves, in feet per minute, which sets washer time, spray time and oven time all at once.
On a continuous line every stage is tied to conveyor speed: dwell in each washer stage, time in the dry-off, gun exposure in the booth and time in the cure oven. Running faster boosts output but can leave parts undercured or thinly coated. Line speed is chosen from the slowest requirement, usually oven cure on the heaviest part being hung.
"Drop the line speed to 8 feet a minute while the heavy frames are on, they need the oven time."
Line speed in railroad
The maximum authorized velocity for a specific section of track under normal conditions.
The permanent speed limit assigned to a segment of railway, dictated by track geometry, rail weight, signal spacing, and curvature. Timetables and track charts publish these limits, which dictate the fastest a train can legally travel unless restricted by temporary slow orders or signal indications.
"We hit the straightaway past milepost 40 and finally got back up to line speed."
