Kiss

Kiss turns up in 2 fields: machine shop, aviation. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Machine Shop Slang

Kiss in machine shop

To touch a tool or grinder to a surface as lightly as possible, removing almost nothing.

Making the lightest possible contact, to find a surface, clean up a face or remove a burr without changing size. A kiss cut leaves a surface just cleaned up, often with a faint witness of the original surface showing. Grinder hands kiss a part to check the wheel is touching before feeding in.

"Just kiss the face to clean it up, don't take a full pass, we need every thou of that length."

Aviation & Aerospace

Kiss in aviation

A gentle mid-air collision between the fabric envelopes of two hot air balloons.

A kiss is a minor, low-speed contact between two balloons in flight. Because balloon envelopes are large, flexible, and moving at similar wind speeds, these bumps rarely cause damage or compromise flight safety. Pilots actively manage their vertical spacing to avoid them, but they are common at crowded balloon festivals.

"We had a slight kiss with the blue balloon on ascent, but the fabric held fine."
