Cut-out

Cut-out turns up in 2 fields: corrosion, electrotechnology. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Corrosion & Cathodic Protection

Cut-out in corrosion

Section of pipe removed from service so corrosion damage can be examined, tested or replaced.

A length of pipe cut from a line, either as the repair itself or to send for lab analysis of internal pitting, deposits, MIC, cracking or coating condition. Cut-outs are split lengthwise, photographed, measured and their deposits cultured or analyzed. They give the only direct look at internal corrosion that ILI and coupons can only infer.

"Send the cut-out to the lab with the deposits still in it, don't let anybody wash it at the shop."

Electrotechnology

Cut-out in electrotechnology

A fused assembly connecting a customer service drop to the overhead distribution lines.

A combination of a fuse and a disconnect switch used on overhead distribution networks to protect transformers and branch lines. The fuse link sits inside a tubular carrier that drops open when the fuse blows, providing a visible break in the circuit and isolating the fault from the main feeder.

"We had a lightning strike on the pole and the transformer cut-out dropped open."
