A combination of a fuse and a disconnect switch used on overhead distribution networks to protect transformers and branch lines. The fuse link sits inside a tubular carrier that drops open when the fuse blows, providing a visible break in the circuit and isolating the fault from the main feeder.
We had a lightning strike on the pole and the transformer cut-out dropped open.
Lineworkers look for the hanging tube of a blown cut-out as a quick visual indicator of a localized fault while patrolling a line.
