Crock
Crock turns up in 2 fields: textiles, shop slang. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Crock in textiles
To transfer dye from a fabric to another surface through rubbing.
The unwanted transfer of color from a dyed textile to another surface caused by abrasion or rubbing. It occurs when excess dye is not properly washed out or fixed during manufacturing, and is tested using both wet and dry rubbing methods.
"This new batch of indigo denim crocks so badly it turned my hands blue just folding it."
Crock in shop slang
A piece of equipment, process or statement that is completely useless or false.
Workers use this term to dismiss a broken machine, a flawed procedure or a management claim that lacks substance. When applied to machinery, it means the equipment is worn out and unreliable. When applied to a directive or explanation, it means the information is misleading, impractical or nonsensical.
"Don't bother trying to calibrate that old gauge, the whole setup is an absolute crock."
