Box
Box turns up in 2 fields: gears, printing. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Box in gears
Shop shorthand for a gearbox, reducer or transmission, as in the box is whining or pull the box.
Everyday shortening for any enclosed gear drive: an industrial reducer, a wind turbine gearbox, a truck transmission or a lathe headstock. Crews talk about the box running hot, pulling the box, tearing down the box and sending the box out for rebuild. It treats the gears, bearings, shafts, seals and oil as one unit.
"Box is running twenty degrees hotter than last month, pull an oil sample and check the vibration before it grenades."
Box in printing
To surround a layout element with a printed border or rule.
To enclose text, images, or layout elements within a printed border or rule. This isolates the content from the main text flow, often used for sidebars, pull quotes, or warning notices.
"Let's box the safety warnings so they stand out from the instruction steps."
