Bleeding edge
Bleeding edge turns up in 2 fields: printing, shop slang. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Bleeding edge in printing
The outermost perimeter of a document's bleed area, which will be discarded during trimming.
The absolute outer boundary of the printed artwork before the sheet is cut down to its final size. Anything placed between the trim line and this boundary will be sliced off by the bindery. Designers must ensure no critical text or logos sit near this zone.
"Keep the page numbers well inside the safety margin, nowhere near the bleeding edge."
Bleeding edge in shop slang
Technology or processes so new and untested that they cause frequent failures and frustration.
This describes systems, software, or equipment that are pushed into production before being fully refined. While it offers the most advanced features, it lacks the stability of established tools. Workers generally dread dealing with these systems because they require constant troubleshooting, undocumented workarounds, and frequent patches.
"Management bought this bleeding-edge inventory software and now nobody can print a basic shipping label."
