Flashback arrestor

nounStandard termWelding

A safety device on an oxyfuel torch or regulator that stops flame from burning back into hoses and cylinders.

Device fitted at the torch, the regulator or both, combining a check valve that blocks reverse gas flow with a sintered element that quenches a flame front, often with a thermal cutoff. It guards against flashbacks from improper lighting, low pressure or a clogged tip, which can otherwise travel back toward the cylinders. Arrestors are inspected regularly and replaced after any flashback.

Heard on the job

No flashback arrestor on the regulator, that rig doesn't leave the cage until it's fixed.

Insider tip

Purge each hose separately before lighting; mixed gas sitting in a hose is how most flashbacks start.
