Termination bars, usually perforated aluminum about 1 inch wide, hold the membrane edge mechanically so it cannot sag or peel away. Fasteners go through the bar at close spacing and a bead of sealant is run along the top edge. Above grade the bar is normally covered with counterflashing so water cannot get behind it.
Membrane's slipping off the parapet, there's no term bar, just a bead of mastic along the top.
A term bar without counterflashing above it relies on a single bead of sealant, which is a maintenance item, not a permanent seal.
