Fleece

nounStandard termWaterproofing

A non-woven fabric backing applied to sheet membranes to improve adhesion or act as a separator.

A layer of synthetic fibers, usually polyester, bonded to the underside of a single-ply waterproofing or roofing membrane. The fabric provides a textured surface that grips liquid adhesives or hot asphalt much better than bare plastic or rubber. It also acts as a cushioning layer over rough substrates and prevents chemical migration between incompatible materials.

Heard on the job

We're using a fleece-backed PVC so we can adhere it directly over the old asphalt roof.

Insider tip

When welding fleece-backed membranes, you must ensure the fleece does not get pulled into the weld area, as it will compromise the seam.
