MPG stands for miles per gallon, the standard metric for vehicle fuel economy in the United States and the United Kingdom. It measures the distance a vehicle travels divided by the volume of fuel consumed. Because the US gallon and the imperial gallon have different volumes, the same vehicle will show a higher MPG figure in the UK than in the US.

Insider tip
Always specify if you are using US or imperial gallons when comparing figures internationally, as an imperial gallon is about twenty percent larger.
