Seersucker

nounStandard termTextiles

A lightweight woven cotton fabric featuring alternating smooth and puckered vertical stripes.

This fabric is woven by holding some warp yarns at tight tension while others are kept slack, forcing the slack yarns to bunch into a permanently crinkled texture. The resulting puckered stripes hold the material away from the skin, facilitating air circulation and heat dissipation. It is heavily utilized in summer tailoring and never requires ironing.

Insider tip

Never press or iron seersucker, as heat and pressure will permanently flatten the signature puckered stripes.
