Bargello

nounStandard termTextiles

A type of needlepoint embroidery using upright flat stitches to create geometric, wave, or flame patterns.

A needlepoint technique worked on canvas using straight, vertical stitches of uniform length that step up and down to form mathematical, repeating patterns. Traditional motifs include zigzags, diamonds, and flame-like curves. By shifting colors in a gradient across the stepped stitches, the technique creates a striking three-dimensional optical illusion. It is also adapted into quilting by strip-piecing fabrics to mimic the wave effect.
