Time-domain reflectometry

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

The technique of analyzing cable faults by transmitting pulses and measuring their reflections.

The measurement process of sending electrical pulses into a conductor and observing the returned signals to characterize the transmission line. It relies on the principle that any change in impedance causes a reflection. Technicians use this method to verify cable integrity, measure cable length, and pinpoint splices, crimps, or damage along copper networks.

We used time-domain reflectometry to prove the fault was 400 feet out, right where the backhoe was digging.
