To key a microphone and broadcast a signal that collides with an ongoing transmission on the same channel. In FM systems, the stronger signal often suppresses the weaker one due to the capture effect, while in AM systems, the two signals mix into a heterodyne squeal. It usually happens when operators fail to listen before transmitting or suffer from hidden node problems.
