A quad is a bundle of four copper wires twisted symmetrically around a common axis to form two distinct communication circuits. This geometry reduces electromagnetic interference and crosstalk between the pairs better than running two separate twisted pairs. Telephone companies frequently use star quad cables for long-distance audio lines and microphone connections where noise rejection is critical.
The microphone feed is running over a shielded star quad to keep the hum out of the broadcast mix.
