Person-to-person

adjectiveStandard termTelecom & IT

An operator-assisted telephone call where billing only begins if a specifically named individual answers.

A historic toll calling service where the caller instructs the human operator to connect them only to a specific person at the destination number. If the requested party was unavailable, the call was not completed and the caller incurred no charges. This carried a higher per-minute rate than standard station-to-station calls due to the manual operator intervention required.

Insider tip

Callers used this feature to send free, pre-arranged signals; for example, asking for a fictitious person like "Mr. Arrived" to let their family know they reached their destination safely without paying for a call.
