Multiplexer-demultiplexer, a device that combines and separates multiple signal streams.

MDM stands for multiplexer-demultiplexer. It is a piece of network hardware that combines multiple low-speed data streams into a single high-speed aggregate link for transmission, and then separates them back out at the receiving end. This maximizes the efficiency of expensive long-haul fiber or copper lines.
