High Speed Downlink Packet Access is a 3G mobile communications protocol in the HSPA family. It allows networks based on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) to achieve higher data transfer speeds and capacity for downlink traffic. By introducing new modulation techniques and fast scheduling, it brought early smartphone users broadband-like download speeds before the advent of LTE.
