Demon dialing

nounShop talkTelecom & IT

The automated, rapid redialing of a busy telephone number to seize a connection the moment it becomes available.

An early telecommunications technique where a modem or specialized software repeatedly and aggressively dials a busy target number. Hackers and BBS users employed this method to brute-force their way into limited modem pools, seizing the line within milliseconds of another user disconnecting.

Heard on the job

I left the modem demon dialing the local BBS overnight just to get a slot to download the file.
