A hardware unit or software algorithm that performs companding on an audio or data signal. It first compresses the dynamic range of the signal before transmission to keep it above the noise floor of the channel, and then expands it back to its original range at the receiver. This technique significantly reduces perceived static and hiss on long-distance voice circuits and radio links.
Heard on the job
We need to align the compandor levels on the microwave link so the voice channels stop sounding clipped.
