A clean feed is a specialized audio output from a mixing console that routes all program audio minus the audio of the person receiving the feed. Broadcasters use it extensively for remote interviews so the remote guest hears the studio hosts and sound effects, but does not hear a delayed echo of their own voice. It is the broadcast equivalent of a mix-minus setup.
Heard on the job
Make sure the remote reporter is getting a clean feed in their earpiece, otherwise the delay will trip them up.
Insider tip
If a remote guest suddenly starts stuttering or pulling out their earpiece, it usually means the clean feed failed and they are hearing their own delayed voice.
