A bird's nest is a chaotic accumulation of unmanaged wires, patch cables, and power cords. In server rooms or telecommunications closets, a bird's nest makes tracing connections nearly impossible and severely restricts airflow to active equipment. Untangling one usually requires scheduling network downtime to pull and re-run the cables with proper management hardware.
I spent three hours tracing a single bad fiber through the bird's nest in rack four.
Never use zip ties to clean up a bird's nest of data cables; use hook-and-loop fasteners to avoid crushing the insulation and causing crosstalk.
