A polycarbonate disc that stores digital data in microscopic pits read by a 405-nanometer blue-violet laser. The shorter wavelength allows the laser to focus on a much smaller spot than older red-laser formats, drastically increasing the data density per layer. IT departments occasionally use them for cold storage backups due to their physical durability and immunity to magnetic degradation.
