To tamp is to pack a loose substance firmly into a hole or container using repeated light blows.

To compress loose material, such as soil, gravel, or powder, by repeatedly striking it from above. This removes air pockets and creates a solid, stable mass. It is a critical step in civil engineering for setting posts, preparing foundations, and packing explosives into drill holes.

Make sure you tamp the gravel base thoroughly before pouring the concrete, or the slab will settle and crack.
