Babysitter test

phraseShop talkShop Slang

An informal usability check to see if an untrained person can operate a system without instruction.

This usability standard dictates that a machine, software interface, or tool must be intuitive enough for a complete novice to operate safely. Engineers and designers use this concept to strip away unnecessary complexity from control panels. If a temporary user cannot figure out the basic functions immediately, the design fails the check and requires revision.
