An operating crew member responsible for switching cars, throwing switches, and handling freight.

A broad operational classification for railroad employees who work on the ground and in the cab, excluding the locomotive engineer. Trainmen include conductors, brakemen, and switchmen. They are responsible for coupling cars, lacing air hoses, lining switches, and ensuring the safe makeup of the train.
