Flying meet

nounStandard termRailroad

A maneuver where two opposing trains pass each other at a siding without either having to stop.

A perfectly timed dispatching event on single-track territory where one train takes the siding and the other holds the main, passing each other in motion. It requires precise speed control by both engineers and excellent timing by the dispatcher to maintain momentum and save fuel.

Dispatcher set us up for a flying meet at milepost 42, so keep it right at thirty miles an hour.

Insider tip

Pulling off a flying meet is a point of pride for dispatchers, as it prevents the massive fuel burn required to start a heavy freight train from a dead stop.
