Flat junction

nounStandard termRailroad

A track junction where lines merge or cross at the same elevation.

An at-grade intersection of two or more rail lines where diverging or converging routes cross each other directly on the surface. Because opposing movements conflict physically, flat junctions require complex interlocking signals and limit overall traffic capacity compared to grade-separated flyovers.

Heard on the job

They're putting in a new crossover at the flat junction to speed up the routing.
