Atlantic

nounStandard termRailroad

A steam locomotive built with a 4-4-2 wheel arrangement.

A fast passenger steam locomotive featuring a four-wheel leading truck, four driving wheels, and a two-wheel trailing truck. The addition of the trailing truck allowed for a wider, deeper firebox behind the driving wheels, which generated the massive amounts of steam needed to sustain high speeds on express passenger runs.
