A decorative illustration or ornament printed at the beginning or end of a chapter.

A small ornamental design or illustration placed at the opening of a chapter, the title page, or the end of a section. In traditional printing, these were often wood engravings or metal casts featuring fading, unbordered edges that blended smoothly into the surrounding paper. Pressmen must carefully adjust the make-ready to ensure the soft edges of the block print cleanly without leaving a harsh impression line.
