Turtle-press

nounStandard termPrinting

A high-speed rotary printing press that used curved chases to hold type on a cylinder.

An historic type-revolving printing press designed for mass newspaper production. It utilized heavy, curved chases known as turtles to lock standard flat movable type directly onto a large central rotating cylinder. This design allowed for much faster impressions than flatbed presses, dominating daily newspaper printing before curved stereotyping became standard.
